Re: OEM Storm Message Update #2
Advisories and Watches Issued

Dear Resident,

The National Weather Service has updated the ‘Impactful Storm’ briefing statement for our region. At this time, a Wind Advisory is in effect until 7pm this evening, a Coastal Flood Watch remains in effect until noon today, a Wind Chill Advisory begins at 6pm this evening until 10am Saturday and a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 6pm tonight.

A cold front will move across the area late this morning bringing rain showers ending as a quick burst of snow with rapidly falling temperatures. Little, if any, snow will accumulate, but there is the potential for briefly heavy snow that could lead to a quick drop in visibility.  As temperatures rapidly drop it will lead to a quick freezing of any wet surfaces resulting in icy conditions that may last through at last this afternoon.  Winds can gust up to 50mph as the front moves in bringing wind chills as low as 10 below zero.

Wet ground and high winds can lead to downed trees and power outages.  My office and Marlboro OEM have been in contact with JCP&L and they have confirmed that it is prepared to activate its storm response and Incident Command System plans.   In the event outages occur due to severe weather, report your outage by calling 1-888-LIGHTSS (1-888-544-4877), clicking the “Report Outage” link on www.firstenergycorp.com, or by texting ‘out’ to 544487.    Reporting outages to JCP&L ensures that you receive updates and estimated restoration times for your home which may be on a different circuit than your neighbor.

Please take a moment now to review NJ OEM winter safety tips to protect your family and winterize your home.  In advance of the storm:

  • Secure all outside decorations, loose objects and lay basketball hoops flat.
  • Keep all personal electronics and backup batteries charged.
  • Gather flashlights and batteries.
  • Review the steps to plan and prepare for an outage at http://ready.nj.gov/plan-prepare/power-outages.shtml
  • Visit Optimum Website to track service interruptions and report outages.
  • Please assist us in keeping sewer drains on or near your property clear and free from leaves, trash and other debris. Clean drains allow water to run freely, prevents flooding and reduces the possibility for frozen standing water.

Assume all downed wires are alive and dangerous. Report to the Marlboro Division of Police at 732-536-0100 to report.  In case of emergencies, dial 911. Should power outages occur, please do not call the police outage updates.  They do not have additional information and it is vital that their lines stay open for emergencies.

As we begin a holiday weekend, I want to take a moment and thank those that will be at work when most are home.  We are grateful to Marlboro Police, our volunteer Fire and First Aid Squads and our Marlboro Police Dispatch who answer the phone at your time of need. Medical personnel who tend to us at clinics, hospitals, pharmacies and assisted living and nursing homes are always on call. When a storm is incoming, Public Works, JCP&L line workers, and Offices of Emergency Management at the local, county and state level are all called to service.

We hope for the best and plan for the worst.  Please support their efforts by being prepared. This is never a welcome weather forecast, but it is especially unwelcome before a holiday weekend.  I wish a very Merry Christmas to those that celebrate.

We will update you as necessary.
